New bridge to be named for Rosie Hackett
Dublin City Councillors have voted to name the new bridge over the Liffey after Rosie Hackett, the 1913 Lockout and Eater Rising veteran who helped establish and build the Irish Women Workers Union.
In a vote at their meeting of Monday, September 2nd, Hackett finished ahead of Dublin GAA star Kay Mills, Alone founder Willie Bermingham, Dracula author Bram Stoker and Legion of Mary founder Frank Duff. Under a system which involved councillors giving five votes to their first preference and then working their way down to one for their fifth after which everything was simply added up, Rosie got 192 votes with the others receiving 176, 167, 92 and 80 respectively.
Speaking afterwards, Rosie’s nephew, John Gray said that he was “delighted and proud” and said that while his aunt might have been a little embarrassed at the thought of receiving such an honour, she would be thrilled too.
A Bridge for Rosie: What’s all this racket about Rosie Hackett?
Dublin City Council’s 52 councillors are scheduled to vote on the bridge issue next Monday (September 2nd). The vote is likely to be based on a “preferendum” with everyone voting one to five or five to one and the name with the lowest/highest number (you get what we mean) winning. Lower preferences will, therefore, be hugely important in deciding the matter.
